It has been called the greatest of all Dickens films.  Orphan Pip lives a simple life with a kindly blacksmith and the blacksmith’s rowdy wife. He is summoned to meet the mysterious, tragic and sinister Miss Haversham in her mansion and is introduced to the beautiful Estella. Miss Haversham was jilted on her wedding day and lives frozen in time, the clocks have been stopped, she still wears her wedding dress and the tables laid for a banquet are now festooned with cobwebs. An escaped convict hides in a churchyard and confronts and threatens Pip forcing him to steal food and risk another thrashing. And when an unknown benefactor pays for Pip to become a gentleman his story moves to London.

The film won Academy Award for Best Cinematography and Academy Award for Best Art Direction-Interior Black & White
