Mortensen and his family of six children live in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. They lead an extreme, eccentric and wild life. The children are taught to be physically fit and athletic, hunting for food by day and reading advanced literature at night. Their lifestyle starts to unravel when Mortensen’s wife gets ill and he is forced to consider travelling through the States with his wild brood. The journey calls into question their whole way of life and Mortensen’s style of parenthood. A rather Lord of the Flies beginning to the film then becomes one that is funny, moving and thought provoking as well as being an extraordinary visual and sartorial treat.
The film won Directing Prize of un Certain Regard and Satellite Award for Best Actor
