A beautifully shot film set in France during World War 1. The human drama of love, loss and hardship in rural France unfolds apace with the seasons. While the able bodied menfolk are off fighting, their women run the farms. Country life continues much as it always has as the women fight a different type of battle to plough and sow the fields, bring in the harvests, and tend the livestock. An occasional trip home by the soldiers is the only glimpse we get of their war. The orphaned Francine (Bry) is employed to help at the farm and feels she has finally found a family and a place she might belong. With music by Michel Legrand.
