Ex Machina

Alex Garland’s directorial debut is this intelligent and thought provoking science fiction film. A geeky employee wins a staff lottery to visit the home of his reclusive tech guru boss to see his latest secret product. He takes a helicopter ride to the remote laboratory & home on the private mountainside estate and learns that he is to be the human component in a Turing Test. He meets Ava, an experiment in artificial intelligence who is a seemingly gentle and “thoughtful” robot. The film won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, the critics’ choice movie award for best sci-fi/horror movie as well as other awards.
