The principles of the Enlightenment, which would inspire the French Revolution, first took practical shape in Denmark in the 18th century. The film is the true story of an ordinary man who wins the queen’s heart and starts a revolution in the process. Queen Caroline arrives in Denmark for her wedding and discovers that the truth behind the rumours about her intended husband, the king. It becomes apparent that the King is mentally deranged and infantile. A physician is appointed to look after the King, an idealistic man of enlightenment. This is a gripping tale of brave idealists who risk everything in their pursuit of freedom for their people.
