Set in 1938, a recently widowed child bride is sent to a home for widows where she is expected to live a life of penitence for her sins. Visually beautiful and emotionally gripping the film puts a mirror to the attitude and practices of many parts of India. The filming was eventful, chauvinist Hindu mobs threw the set into the Ganges and armed police tried to protect  the cast and crew. It took a further four years before filming re-started, this time in Sri Lanka.
